Because said "real driving simulator" isn't attempting to simulate realistic crashes.  It's trying, and succeeding to simulate real car handling and behavior for over 1000 cars, among other things.

Car damage is just a plus, and they might perfect it with upcoming titles.  But that has never been the point of GT.

So driving into rails via sharp turns to win races  without any con is part of being a "real driving simulator?" Part of being a simulator is knowing you can simulate a cars behaviour and face the consequences,This involves learning from mistakes via damage to your car.  Yes you're not trying to crash your car willingly but knowing you can instills the fear to make you drive even better. Leveling up to unlock damage, something that should be in from the get go is a joke.Atleast increase  damage penalities for every level gained.

In console sims the damage is a joke when compared to PC sims. Even those console  race games with damage you can get by crashing into rails and other car including Grid.

Now GT5 does have a penalty system for crashing into wall and other cars yet only during license and special event.  This would be more realistic since hitiing walls and car full force would be race over IRL.
