Don't forget Gran Turismo 5 prologue was first released in December 13 2007 (it's now 2010). The prologue also saw updates and had a Spec III release in 2008 as well.
So IMO in a nutshell there's a lot of fuss amongst primarily US media for nothing. As you point out the game is huge, so huge it's impossible to iron out any minor flaws. IMO sadly quite a few people are trying hard to highlight any potential lows they can find to serve personal agendas. This game is awesome, nomatter if people like it that it's awesome or not!
