Valve stated back in 2006 that the 3 episodes of half life 2 would act as half 3 due to the extensive amount of time it took to make half life 2. Despite this something tells me that there will be a third and final enstament of the series. Also why do you think half life 2: episode 3 is taking so long. perhaps its actually half life 3? Who knows...

This is what I think. There's no reason why it should be taking this long to make the last episode. My guess is that they wanted to up the graphics significantly and then figured that they might as well dive right into Half-Life 3.
