After playing another hour, I can tell you, no it isn't a joke. You don't really recognize those bad textures and objects while playing, but they are there, and if you look closely enough you'll see them (but it's not as bad as on those pictures though). But then again, it's not like this on all tracks, I've played a few which looked awesome, but some don't impress at all.
That said I could have been a bit early saying that this is the best looking racing game, but I need to play longer to make a final statement. But obviously, there are just too big differences regarding graphics in GT5.
