So I'm not sure if I'm reading what you wrote correctly, but according to your theory ESPN is stupid in order to appeal to stupid beer drinking Americans.  I guess that would make everything that they do make much more sense and I might have to agree. ESPN is not stupid, but I agree with everything else you have said up to this point.

I have a couple of questions for you though:

What is hockey's limited demographic?  The attendance figures that nordlead brought up would argue otherwise.  Limited to the places that are actually below freezing in the daytime during winter.

They are appealing to the masses according to you. That's actually the part I agreed with you about.

Anyone who doesn't know who Howard Cossell is, is either really young or doesn't know a thing about sports announcers.  You probably don't know who Jack Buck is either. I'm 25... So it's both.

Tell the San Jose Sharks fan base that.  They have one of the largest and most loyal group of fans in hockey.  Got me there. But I don't honestly think that ice hockey is that much smarter a sport than NASCAR (if you can call NASCAR a sport). I mean, this is a sport that glorifies violence in ways that Yankee football never could. When someone gets flattened while playing ice hockey, it's just another day at the office as far as fans are concerned; when someone gets flattened while playing football, it's genuinely disturbing to fans.
