It doesn't take a plane to transport a bomb or weapons in the US, it doesn't take a plane to have a lot of people at one place (hey, it's Black Friday in a few days). Planes feature more frequently in terrorist attacks due to the high level of tension surrounding flying. The threat of terrorism adds the fear. Of course, that's not to say attacks don't happen elsewhere, it's just that people haven't already got worries about going shopping on black Friday, going to an NFL game, or jumping on a bus/train.
