It would appear that they've both met with quite a bit of success, though with the ipad the evidence is somewhat anecdotal as it doesn't give any hard numbers and it compares it with the notebook market (I don't really feel the ipad should count as a notebook...).
So there's a chance that Kinect could be experiencing geniune success despite what their marketing attempts might imply. It seems the use of viral marketing by Microsoft is a general approach and says nothing about how well they feel their product will fare; on the other hand, events that have been shown to employ such tactics can also not be used as a solid indicator of success.
