The biggest problem is that there is no official public source of numbers.
VGC tries its best ... and usually gets pretty darn close.
But video games will never be taken seriously as a medium/art until there are official third-party releases like there seem to be with every other entertainment medium.
But instead, it seems like those in charge are happier poking fun of those try to provide estimates. Very mature behavior.
We all know that Kinect will do well -- at first. But is the market larger then 5-7M for this item? And is the market large enough for people to third parties to make games for it? Those are the long-term questions which will take time to answer.
