How important is good storytelling for game sales, popularity & longevity?

Speaking about adventure games (interactive fiction) I do believe the action genre absorbed it for the most part.  Still some doing the classics, but now they mix puzzles with action.  It used to be action-adventure, now action titles seem to get story driven.
