Nintendo is not some God company with a hidden secret to recreating US dollar mint presses. They got lucky with the Wii mainly due to abandoning the "core" gamer and focusing on the mothers and sisters with a gimmick, never done before control scheme to get them hooked. If this is the secret then Microsoft just one upped then with Kinect's revolutionary no controller device.
As for the 3DS, I will not pay more than $150 for a handheld. Last time I bought a handheld was in 2004, the Gameboy Advance, and I put less time on it that year than on my PS2.
Likewise, why would I plug $250 on a 3DS when I can pay at max $200 for an entry level iPhone and play games, take pictures, record video, and check the Internet? I value multiple uses for a piece of hardware over $200, Nintendo is not doing it with the 3DS.

There is one key point that many people overlook, Nintendo's recent domination with the Wii and DS just become real after a man named Satoru Iwata become the president, and for me he is the number one person in the industry and whiles he is at the command in nintendo with the help of Miyamoto & Co. i must say Nintendo is like a God company with the hidden secret to fell what people want and the moment when they want, and again its not the controllers or lack of it its the experience that u will get from the software that will make a difference and nintendo makes better games than anyone will do.
As for the 3DS a few words for u - GLASS FREE 3D - also, sorry but can the iphone 4 plays Avatar in glass free 3d ? can it play Resident Evils relevations ? can it takes 3d photos ? can it plays Resident evil revelations ? Dude IPHONE 4 DOES NOT HAVE BUTTONS (i rather buy a nexus 2)

5.6 million people world wide who bought Black Ops on it first day beg to differ that Nintendo brings them the experience the desire most.
Just think about that for a moment, 5.6 million copies sold in a single day for a non-bundled game that was not marketed at all for Grandma or Auntie. Sure a heavily bundled game like Wii Play will sell 20 million over a 2 year span, but could you say the same on it's launch day or if it was not bundled?
The 3DS is a single use device. A cellphone is a multi-use device(calls, internet, games, pictures and video) and if you have kept up on the latest in cellphone games, they have Street Fighter 4 for the iPhone and iPad with comparable graphics to the PS3 and 360. A major 1 for the cellphone industry right there.
As for 3D, ehh. I never liked gimmicks anyways.
