I. Overfishing of the Blue Ocean "What was once a Blue Ocean with a sole fishing vessel with a Nintendo logo and Mario's face on it is now accompanied by Sony and Microsoft vessels where fishing lines will tangle and red blood in the water will be apparent from land." There's really no proof Sony or Microsoft are capable of this, at least anywhere near the level Nintendo is at. I'd give Kinect some time on the market (to gauge its success) before giving them the benefit of the doubt. II. Complete, Entire, Utter Underestimation of Online Gaming & III. Lack of Top Notch Western 3rd Party Support Neither of the above stopped the Wii from dominating this gen, so I'm not sure why these are brought up. The third party bit especially, as that's something they plan on correcting (see 3DS) - which, if they do, will turn into a strength the Wii never had. IV. Overreliance on an Unreliable Gaming Market If Nintendo continues to release compelling software for this "unreliable" market, there isn't a problem. V. Overreliance on Milked Out Memes I actually don't understand what your point is here, could you clarify? |
I. Of course there is no proof. We are not even a year out from the release of Move and Kinect. Sales aside, the very point of Sony and Microsoft taking note of the Wii's success and hedging in on the market means Nintendo will have to seriously up it's game to acquire Wii-like sales in the Blue Ocean in the next generation.
II. & III. You are correct. However, if you look at the fastest selling 1st week sales, those games are not released on the Wii. Lately they have been multi-platform, non-exclusive games (Halo is an exception).
IV. Understanding them is the problem. Nintendo has not been short of releases this year and they have not recaptured the magic from 2008 and earlier, which makes me wonder how much does Nintendo know about those who are new to gaming?
V. I can clarify. Name the newest Nintendo IP with a fleshed out character and universe which has sold at levels comparable to a Zelda or Mario game. Pikmin? No, and definitely not Wii Play or any of the best selling IPs which are more similar to work out games than a Mario game.
Miyamoto has been rumored to be working on a new IP. We all hope it comes to fruition before another anniversary re-release of a SNES or N64 game.
