I wonder why nobody complains about PS Move's space requirements then.
Sure, PS Move recommends a distance of 2m or more as well, but it's really just a recommendation and works just fine even if the distance is much shorter. I tried Move in a friend's house in which the couch is just about 1m from the TV and I did not experience any problems. In the case of Kinect however, the 2/2.5m distance is pretty much a minimum distance.
The difference between the two systems is is: The Kinect sensor really needs to see your whole body from head to feet, while for PS Move it's sufficient that the PS Eye sees the torso. And that means the minimum distance is only about half as long.
