let's simplify... 3 people 1 owns a wii PS3, one owns a 360 PS3 and one only PS3.

then you have 2 that own a PS3 and a WII or a 360... but there is no margin to have someone that owns all 3.

to have the 78% owning one or both, you need more than 42% owning 360 and more than 36% owning Wiis.

The mistake you made is that "42% also own a Wii, 36% also own a 360" doesn't mean "42% own ONLY a Wii (and PS3)". If someone owns all three of consoles, she is counted in both 42% and 36% parts. That's exactly why 42 plus 36 == 78 (not coincidence) and where your math failed.

:-X and in statistics you count people twice?

say your wii owners all have a 360 too and none have just the wii.

Then the statement becomes be 42% own a 360 (the wii owners plus 6%xbox only), 36% own a wii and 42% own one or both.
