I like the fact that I live in a multicultural country where all people of all races and religions can live free of fear of racist pricks.

Yep... no racism in Canada... none at all.

Everyone can live happily and free with no problems! Its a utopia.

12 years wtf? Pretty sure that's about the same as rape. Don't think that's fair but whatever.

I honestly don't think there should be "hate crimes" at all, a crime is a crime is a crime as far as I'm concerned doesn't matter if a white guy did it to a black guy or a black guy did it to a white guy (in which case it wouldn't be considered racist btw, but that's for another discussion)

I'd agree with that in most cases. But cases like burning a cross, is that really a crime? It becomes a crime because of how it is done. Same with drawing a Swastika on someones house. Its just a drawing right. Legally your just vandalizing. But it is used to intimidate and harrass and abuse citizens. Making it a hate crime.

I certainly agree its completely wrong to burn a swastica or cross or something on a guys lawn but is racism really a punishable crime? Its certainly vandalism and destruction of property but should it be a higher sentence because the guy who did it is racist prick who is trying to intimidate others of a different race?

I really don't think the way we're going to eliminate racism is by sending people to jail who commit hate crimes.
