Far more Republicans got elected in every facet of government than democrats did. Governors, Congressmen, Senators all went heavily Republican. The only reason they didn't take the Senate was that they only elect 1/3rd of the senators each cycle. If they elected a similar number of senators as they did governors or congressman, the Republicans would have a 55 or even 60 member majority.
