Marriage is not meaningless, it is a social custom that has evolved since the begining of man. Women use to be sold into marriage by their father and later marriage became the escape plan for male and female teenages in the 15th century and on. Marriage for love is the newest transformation. If you think marriage means picking one person and never divorcing because the church says so then you are blind. The church has never changed anything about marriage, people can still get sold into marriage and the church wouldn't care. Today, less people are getting married because there is less need for it. Sinlge moms are not viewed as whores, single men are just players, and more people are choosing to live out of the closet. Last I read, around less then 40% of people age 20-50 are married and this number is decreasing every year.
