Yeah, this is what I don't get; everyone is acting as if the Mayans predicted that the world would end when all they really did was make a calendar that stopped counting in 2012. Maybe if their culture had persisted, they would simply make a new one for a new era? Kind of like our BC and AD counting.

This feels kind of like the Y2K phenomenon all over again or all those religious nuts commiting mass suicide because the Lord was coming down to end the world.

maybe they just didnt know what number came after 2012? like, maybe they lost count or ran out of marbles or something.
