15 Reasons why ps3 shouldn't be worried about its future :
1. It is one of the best (and certainly best value) Blu-Ray players available with better upscaling and superior audio to its counterpart, the 360.
2. HD-DVD will be discontinued in about 18 months. Expect Warner to announce Blu-ray exclusivity this quarter (the final nail).
3. VOD services will benefit the PS3 as it has by far the best streaming capabilities of any videogame console. Optical media will still dominate for at least 10 years.
4. PS3's Home service will offer greater functionality than Xbox Live, but will be paid for by advertising not the end user.
5. PS3 is still out of the mass market price range but will see a cut before xmas '08 that will see a massive sales increase.
6. PS2 fans attracted to stuff like the Eyetoy will likely defect to Nintendo, but casuals within the core VG demographic (males age 16-36) will still likely choose PS360 as their console of choice.
7. PS3 hardware is superior to its competition in almost every respect, and will likely be supported for the longest amount of time.
8. PS3 PR strategy could scarcely get any worse, although '07 was still an improvement over '06. Their long term strategy will start to pay off as blu-ray becomes more widespread.
9. Hardware variations have stimulated sales already, and the entry level 40gb SKU could still potentially have software BC, like the 360 (although your only option at the mo is to install linux with PS2emu, which isn't very good).
10. Sony have more in-house developers than Nintendo & Microsoft.
11. Most of the hot games that were supposed to be released in '07 were delayed, so '08 is looking to be a great lineup.
12. Only a fanboy would claim that original IPs like lair, heavenly sword or uncharted would be system sellers. Only a fool would deny that established multi-million selling franchise like FF, GT & MGS will be system sellers.
13. PS3 has exclusives : good for them cause Wii and X360 have too
14. Nintendo have separated themselves from the pack by offering something completely different. Microsoft is Sony's only direct competition in the market, and despite making significant gains (esp. in US) they will really have to pull something out of the bag to fend off sony in the next couple of years.
15. PS3 is the successor to the two most successful consoles ever released, one of which is still attracting new gamers at a healthy rate.
Sony have been criticised for slow sales, but their integrated strategy means that they could sell at the same rate for the next 4 years, and still make an extremely healthy profit. Frankly I don't think they have any cause for concern. The expansion and fragmentation of the market means all 3 parties will likely experience success this generation.
