They aren't getting a good result. Just because they are shipping well now, doesn't mean it will continue. Sales have continously gone down every week for the Move, despite the Christmas frenzy that has already begun. I can gaurentee you that MS understood that 500 mill was spent so that people are actually going to buy the 360 system, which is $300 bucks. 300 x 2,000,000 (MS's lowest aproximation)= 600,000,000 dollars in the first quarter. put that up to the highest estimation: 300 x 4,000,000 = 1,200,000,000, in the first quarter. Not very many people are actually going to buy the 150 kinect, cause it's too expensive. Everyone here has stated that. MS has done this so that their cream of the crop is going to be the casual gamer this fall. And just like how pachter predicted this coming spring, the 360 will see a price drop, along with a Kinect price drop. Both of these price drops will sky rocket sales. People enjoy the Kinect (including myself) enough to just play with this interface. Watching a movie is actually fun. It's amazing. LIterally. There is nothing in this room except you, your t.v, and your xbox 360 kinect bundle. And your watching t.v. No remotes, no controllers, just awesomeness. The interface alone drives people crazy (MS has actually done studies on just the interface alone, and they have yielded these results). |
As is always the case with these types of items, What games do you realistically see being created for Kinect? What companies do you see making these games for Kinect? And how much support do you see Kinect receiving this late into the generation? Software sells video games. Without software your peripherals are meaningless. This generation is how many year in so far and Developers still have struggled to find a good balance with the Wii and you think they are all going to just jump ship on a product they're tremendously even more inexperienced at? Get real.
My response to the above questions are quite simple and straight-forward.
(What games do you realistically see being created for Kinect? ) I realistically see an absolute ton of shovelware that hardly works for the Kinect. I don't see that out of some negative bias, I see that because Microsoft isn't in a position to accept anything other than what's given to them.
(What companies do you see making these games for Kinect?) I realistically see a lot of third party companies jumping on-board if for no reason other than to be on the ball if Kinect does turn out to be huge. But realistically the software efforts from these third-party companies, I feel will be very similar (If not worse) than the Wii because of how foreign the concept is and how it's just not worth it for them to change how they operate this late into the game. Name the First Party Studios that Microsoft will have at their disposal? Please. And don't mention Rare they haven't been relevant since 1996. It's scarily thin. So where will the reliance on Kinect software fall? Yup, you guessed it those third-parties.
how much support do you see Kinect receiving this late into the generation?
Full, verbal support. Minimal actual support. This needs time for software to actually be developed for it. It's not going to happen over-night and even then there is some serious questions on if software created for it will actually be fun or if it will resemble a more advanced Eye Toy.
The Kinect is priced about as high as a new console will cost you. It really has no games worth mentioning at launch. Microsoft has protected it from criticism / skeptics / etc for quite some time now. It's had multiple features mentioned now removed, it's been turned from Hardware Implementation to a Software one (A bad sign IMO), Questions about how well it will work have arose (Sitting / Lighting conditions/ Can it detect subtle movements / etc), As far as I know games aren't going to be especially cheap on the system. The very first 'game' that got people interested in the product in the first place has basically turned out to be vaporware. Most if not all of the footage shown at big press conferences has been completely staged.
I really belive Kinect will become this generations, SegaCD. Which mind you was also touted as a "New console". The similarities between the two are astounding.
