What are you talking about, GBA had multiple RPGs day one in Japan (Monster Guardians, Rockman.EXE, Yu-Gi-OH! DDM) and hell, it even had an RTS day one (Napoleon). Even in the west, GBA got a good amount of RPGs pretty quick... within it's first year alone it had Golden Sun, Tactics Ogre KoL, Breath of Fire, Lunar Legend, MMBN1-2, Phantasy Star Collection, etc. GBA would be more case for getting a Nintendo handheld "Year 1" if you like RPGs. Granted, RPGs took a little longer to get rolling on DS (FFIII opened the floodgates in 2006), but there were reasons for that (like the industry wide assumed PSP domination in the handheld space), reasons which don't exactly pertain to 3DS. For the western 3DS RPG lineup, I'd say Paper Mario within the first year is pretty much a dead cert (it's even rumored to be a western launch title). Kingdom Hearts 3D has been said to be 2011 as well, and given how cquick Re:Coded's been localized for release, I think we could see that too. Plus, it's still way early... I mean there's a ton of things that could hit (Fantasy Life, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Harvest Moon, Tales of the Abyss, etc, etc), we just don't know yet? Also, DS never got a JP TV-tuner afaik, you must be think the GBA/DS music players? In the US, we did get the DS Opera browser though, so it's not like NOA's averse to multimedia or non-gaming extensions. Remember E3 and those movies from Disney/WB/DW? Netflix seems like an inevitability too imo, given how hugely successful it's been on Wii and the fact that Netflix were even exploring a DSi app. There's just too much draw there, and Nintendo's made for an excellent partner thus far. And if converting video content is all you want for multimedia out of a handheld, I dunno why you'd even consider any Nintendo or PlayStation system. There will always be better options for that. |
Yes looking back on it id say mid year 1 for GBA. Even though I abhorred the design, mayhap I blocked out the first purchase? When it went clamshell with the GBA SP is when it finally became acceptable. You will notice though based on my GBA collection, most of them aren't year one im pretty sure.
I coulda sworn I read something about a tuner card for the DS. Regardless, the only good strategy would be download anyway since both UMD video and DS video carts were a dud and i'd hope they get wider studio support than Disney/WB/DW.
As far as the converting video thing. The point is that gamers generally only want to carry around two devices. If you don't have a smartphone then the 3DS/PSP2 is your only option for multi-media. So the better they are the better.
