All I know is I looked at launch games and thought: 2nd year.

Somehow I have my doubts about being able to effectively sideload content from my PC, this is nintendo we are talking about. But I may end up being surprised. I would not get my hopes up about the video content on the Nintendo Network just yet. Phones are already matching the resolution of the 3DS, if not the 3D effect or the wideness of the screen. Which means ultimately it will probably not be the portable device I watch stuff on.

The reason I have some hope for the PSP2 is because its not been speced yet. Which means there is potential for them to get it right. They _could_ do a lackluster 'upgrade' to the PSP, or they could wow us with a 720p screen, dual nubs or touch nubs, and do the smart thing by dumping UMD. So until they make the release statement and cruelly dash my dreams, my hopes will carry me aloft.

The only launch lineup we have is for Japan (which is 9 games so far).  And really, we know almost nothing about timelines beyond launch (or near launch) estimations for some titles.  "Year 2" implies heavy, heavy assumptions on your part.

In Japan they announced major deals with Fuji TV and Nippon Television Network for streaming content and at E3 they made a point of promoting film content from partners like Disney, Warner Bros and Dreamworks.  The implication here is a pretty heavy focus from Nintendo on video content and partnerships for it imo, which is a pretty significant shift in strategy from where they were with DS/Wii... I think at the very least, we'll get things like Netflix on 3DS in America and probably a "Movie" section in the 3DS Shop.

Nintendo's been pretty open with music and photo files on DSi via SD card, and they're placing even more emphasis on SD use in 3DS already (even bundling a 2GB card and saying all downloads will be played from SD, internal memory is being mainly reserved for save data, system files, programs, etc). I dunno if they'll be quite as open with video content, though there'll surely be hacks for allowing that (as there are on DSi already).  And really, if you want to get the most multimedia experience out of any dedicated games system, you're going to be hacking it (same for Wii, 360, DS, PSP, etc).

I make that assumption based on 2 major factors. One, I ended up doing it with the prior 2 major Nintendo handhelds the DS and GBA. Two, you can pretty much tell the RPG lineup for NA based on the lineup for japan. Which is to say, we will probably see a final fantasy game at or near launch but nothing else for a while.

In Japan, the DS has a bloody TV receiver attachment. We peons over here get squat in that department. The only real option will be whatever comes from the Nintendo Network or whatever you can sideload it with.

The PSP requires zero hacking if you convert the video prior or just download from PSN.

Nintendo is making a go of it, I won't argue that point. Regardless it has some catching up to do. Netflix on 3DS could drop them in reaching distance though, if that pans out well enough.
