During the PS2's reign I was chasing skirts, climbing the coporate ladder, and drinking a ton. Left very little time for me to game, so while I owned a PS2 (and an xbox and gamecube) I probably had less than 30 games that whole gen, between the 3 of them.
So while I don't have the affinity for last gen that some do, there is no doubting that the PS2 was the "perfect storm" of accessibilty for the hardcore, the casual and even the non-gamer. It had a little bit of everything for everyone and delivered it all with style.
If I had some scotch right now, I'd toast to you PS2. Though I might get fired for drinking on the job.
