I'd probably keep it just due to the unlikelyhood of finding the true owner... I mean...
"Hey when you lived there did you often leave amounts of money in your house upwards of $3,000?"
What are the chances he says no? Or anyone does who lived their before.
I'd just set it aside and give people like 3 years to get into contact with me or so. Or till I was about to starve, whichever came first.
