You crazy man. Shrek never gave me a reason to care about any of its characters. They were all wacky comedy fairy tale characters, and all one-dimensional. I got to watch WALL-E and the old guy from Up learn and change and grow, until they reached an understanding about the true meaning of love and friendship. I know Shrek was supposed to learn the same stuff too, but I didn't care about the characters. And "it's okay to be ugly" isn't as epic of a lesson as "letting go of the past," or "breaking out of your routine." Pixar owns awesome morals for all ages. |
Shrek is perhaps not as deep emotionally speaking as Wall-E or Up but it's twice smarter and ten times funnier. You don't need a good morale or an amazing cast of characters to make a good movie.
And the morales are actually what made Wall-E and Up the weakest Pixar movies. They simply tried too hard and it shows especially in Wall-E.
