of course it could be very hardcore, and also not that hardcore :P thats why this game is popular, it attracts both kinds

It's the same reason the main-series Mario games attract all kinds, as does Halo.  Very approachable, fun, and easy to learn for casuals, but complex enough that those who take the time to learn the intricacies will be rewarded.
