All calendars are arbritary from the larger perspective when you think about it. They were all developed without real understanding of the wider Universe and simply mark of time relative to nothing but Earth's orbit around the Sun and default to a certain point in time when they were created.
Add to that most older calendars have had adjustments or are based on research and it just becomes pointless.
The Mayan calendar is nothing special per se and I can't believe people actually belive it might fortell something.
They're handy for scheduling stuff and knowing when to plant crops, but too many people put waaaay too much store in anything ancient - as in reading more than historical curiosity and knowledge into them.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
