Windows vs. Linux isn't the same argument as PSN vs. Xbox Live. Just because it costs more, doesn't mean it's better. http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/how-much-would-you-pay-for-the-best-water-on-earth-1957446/
Think for a second... Why would you get Windows over Linux? Because of the compatability of the programs, and the simplicity, right? [at least, that's what the majority of PC users think] Well, the only difference between PSN and Xbox live is Party support, Cross Game chat, and maybe Halo or any of the other Microsoft 1st party games. Xbox Live isn't more 'simple' than PSN, and the only 'compatibility issues' [comparatively speaking with the PC] are the 1st party games that work on one console, but not the other.
OT: The most probable main four reasons why people would pay for Xbox live is that 1) They bought the Xbox first, and they don't want another console. 2) Halo in itself attributes for the majority of the Live population, but the 1st party games. 3) The pride concept. They're full fledged fanboy, and refuse to believe that any system other than the Xbox is superior, and subconsciously tell themselves that Live is better because you have to pay for it. 4) Their friends all have an Xbox, so they get an Xbox too, which creates a chain reaction that makes THEIR friends get an Xbox. I don't know if I should count this, because it happens on the Ps3 as well.
