I could see it pulling off 7.2 million tops; this is the benchmark PS3 title in terms of jumping that sales hurdle.

FF13 got mixed reactions and still pulled off 4.3m on the PS3.

I think 7 million would be somewhat low.  Rumor has it Sony is prepping 7 million copies just for launch.

That wouldn't be surprising, in all honesty.  Gran Turismo has historically been the best selling IP on PlayStation platforms, topped only by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and San Andreas on ps2.  Now that the franchise's biggest competition is multiplatform (both GTA and now CoD), I believe it will yet again be the best selling series on its respective platform, with GT5 topping Modern Warfare 2's >8.69 million.

OT:

I think it could be the second best selling GT of all time.  I think it'll break 10 million eventually, and GT and GT4 are at 10.85 and 10.56 respectively.  If it dies out just north of ten million, it could easily end up being the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th best selling GT, given how close in proximity they are.

In direct comparison to GT4, I think it'll do better in EMEAA, about the same in NA, and worse in Japan.  Europe is actually the one region in which GT4 outpaced GT3.

I went a little more in depth at what GT5 could really achieve WW. The main thing I looked out was EMEAA sales for all consoles and of course, past GT efforts.

The thought that makes the most sense in my mind At the Moment is that.... GT5 could nab 4.5m in EMEAA when things are all said and done. I can't really see more than 1.0m from Japan.

America is the wildcard here. They might not be as passionate about racing as them Europeans lol However sales may still be fairly close.

I'd say Good-case scenario: 4.5m EMEAA/ 1.0m Japan/ 3.3m America.

So I guess GT5 will sell 8.8 million!
