What does next-gen mean? Does it mean most revolutionary? most different? does it mean better gameplay? bettter graphics?

Generations are just hardware release cycles, really. I guess you could argue that Wii and PS3 are each more 'next-gen' than X360, since they were released later. :P

That's the literal meaning, but when people say that "you can tell this is a next gen gam" what do they really mean. Do they simply mean that it looks as though it was developed on next gen hardware, or it plays much better than older games?

And here we pass from the realm of the objective to the realm of the subjective.

It's true, much like the term 'hardcore,' 'next-gen' means whatever the hell it means to the person who uses it. And they will use it to serve their purposes and probably not bother to clarify their meaning.

Really, they shouldn't use the term 'next-gen' at all if they're talking about gameplay or graphics. That's why we have the terms 'gameplay' and 'graphics.' Duh.

And I get the feeling that's what you're really trying to say. ;)
