Thanks, I haven't had time as I've been away on and off for the last three weeks, hoping it will sort itself out while I am away, but when I get back I'll send it off.

Yes, the warranty is 1 year. However, they've extended the warranty to Jan. 15 for launch owners because of drive motor failures like what happened to me. How long have you had your system? I'm not sure if the extended warranty only covers the disc drive problem, or if it would cover your problem as well.

I got mine in at UK launch, so I should be fine

At least most of the hardware problems are random and unrelated, much like ours.  There are still no signs of a faulty hardware design, like those that led to the ps2 DRE's and 360 RRoD.
