I never understand why people call anime "mature" and other cartoons not. (This comes from one who likes to watch anime.) Anime as a whole is not more mature than your American cartoon. There are serious, "mature" anime movies/series as well as there are childish and immature ones (the majority). The exact same thing applies for animations from any country.
And btw, all that hair splitting with calling only Japanese stuff anime, even the Japanese don't care much about it. Many people here call anime simply "TV manga" or only "manga". And American comics and cartoons are also called "manga" or even "anime". I wish most of those obsessed kids wouldn't try to be holier than the pope and just enjoy what they like and don't care so much about how others call it.
