I think this is a smart move by MS. You make people to connect their consoles. This will push Xbox Live Accounts (bigger userbase for advertising) and once they are online, they might even pay for Xbox Live. You might want to try to play Forza Motorsports 3 online.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
