Dota, along with League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth, are part of a new genre called MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). Basically, you control a character and play on a map together with a group of other players against an enemy team. The goal is usually to destroy the enemy's building, while preventing your own from being destroyed. Non-controllable units spawn at regular intervals that follow a path to the opposing team's base, you can equip your character with various items and gain experience, thus leveling up and upgrading your abilities.
