Notorious B.I.G. shot dead at 24. Tupac dead at 25. Young and dead makes musicians/singers more famous by default. There music is ordinary but they are famous because they were  killed by rival gang bangers. 

Jimi Hendrix/Jim Morison and Kurt Kobain all dead at 27. Without being dead they would of just been another singer and not worth the time of day. Nirvana and The Doors are ordinary but their mysterious deaths make them famous. 

I'm not a fan of rap.  I don't care for Hendrix or the Doors and I like a few songs by Nirvana.  But that doesn't change how influential every one of the names that you mentioned were in their time, when they were ALIVE.

Keith Moon

Hank WIlliams

Otis Redding 

Those are just a few and they would not have been as famouse as they were/are if they "would have been just another singer." 

In music (and film), it's hard to be rememered and loved by so many when your influence is snatched from the world before its time, when all you were before you died was mediocre at best.

Wanna add Marvin Gaye to that list?  He was dead by the time I heard of him but I heard his music and bought two albums.  Even my PSP has Marvin Gaye in the playlist.  Same goes for Aaliyah.  She's somewhat forgotten but when she was alive, every song she came out with became instant #1.  Being dead didn't make these two artists great.  They were great and then they died.  There is such a thing!!
