I have never had any issue with the app store and personally even if I did I would never go to Apple and its walled garden. If we are going to see a backlash it will be against the walled garden approach by Apple not the Android free for all.
If you are new to smart phones then expect to charge your phone once a day. My Desire will last two days and it gets used a lot but the second day can be scary. I use my phone for work email and I also have the WiFi permanently on. The phone recently upgraded to the 2.2 without a hitch (well at least for me T-Mobile UK).
I have been using smart phones for a long time but this is the first phone that I enjoy using!
