1 in 3 UK households owns a Wii

One in three UK households owns a Wii, according to figures from Chart-Track.

The sales monitor compared the number of Wii owners to the number of households in the UK, which stood at 24.9 million in 2006, according to data from the Office of National Statistics.

That means Nintendo's sold approximately 8.3 million Wiis in the UK. The company also says "over eleven million" UK households are "enjoying Nintendo DS". Whichever way you look at it, a lot of people up and down the country own Nintendo systems.

The impressive stats were rolled out alongside the news that Nintendo's signed up a celebrity cast to help promote its products in the run up to Christmas.

The line-up features Dame Helen Mirren, JLS, Sir Terry Wogan, Jamie and Louise Redknapp (the ads better be an improvement on those Thomas Cook ones), Ant and Dec, Alexandra Burke and Jedward.

Nintendo UK marketing director Dawn Paine said: "This year's star line up is the best yet, demonstrating the wide appeal of Nintendo products.

"This Christmas, with the help of our celebrity friends, we will be helping the nation play together and have fun whatever their age. Look out for the first advert featuring JLS enjoying Wii Party at 18:45 during Monday's Hollyoaks on Channel 4."
