But couldn't they have tested the market with a more affordable price, something like "will people buy a download only PSP for 150$-180$?". Besides the size and portability Sony didn't really gave a reason to buy the PSP Go but actually gave many reasons to not buy it (price, poor support, incompatibility).

True, true they should have done.

I just hope they never, ever ever... EVER make a DD only device ever again.

SCE will; eventually everyone will.

The PSP Go was just a little too early and a little too expensive.

But, as it was mentioned, the PSP Go was SCE's market test for DD only devices, and was sold at a pretty decent profit for both the hardware (a 2005 chipset with less than $30 worth of NAND memory) and the software (considering new games cost the same $40 as UMD retail copies).

Mobile smart phones, Android based phones, iPodTouch/iPhone have already proven that DD only devices work successfully even if they don't offer ideal platforms for core gaming. Of course non of those platforms have $40 games either (or big games that approach the 1GB mark, much less crack that).
