What his roommates did was despicable and they deserve to get screwed over hard for it (any kind of jail time will suffice, IMO, but five years is a bit much).
With that said, anyone who jumps off a bridge because they're gay in 2010 New York has a screw loose. Did he ever bother actually looking around that place? It's hardly earth-shattering news to be a homosexual in that area.
I'd probably have more sympathy for the dude if he went to Liberty University or something. Nah, I take that back. People who go to Liberty University deserve to have bad things happen to them.
