I'm against genetic alteration simply because we don't have the correct systems in place to control it.

Honestly though, I trust the atheists. Trust in the people who always make sure to look at all sides of the coin, not just the one they are forced to look at.

To control what?  And what systems don't we have in place or couldn't put in place?

To quote some smart guy "He who controls the fountain of life controls the world"

I just don't think we have the proper restraints in place. I can see it quickly spiraling out of control. Mostly in a military aspect....

but I can also see it tear humanity in two when it gets to the point where a race of super babies are starting to be created by the super rich. I'm not thrilled about inventing new ways to divide us.

However, I would be all for disease and disorder treatment, but who's to say that they wouldn't go further? Especially when money is involved.

I know I sound like a nut, but given the way the market works, it's hard to say it wouldn't happen. Just look at how our food is made.

Futher with what?  I don't get exactly what your issue is.

Like, they'd pay someone to make their child have a higher IQ and be more physically fit naturally?

What would be bad about that again?   The average IQ of the world would be higher, and the average health of the world would be more fit.

Like spiraling out of control in a military aspect?  Again, how?  I mean genetic engineering isn't like the marvel universe, you can't create superpowered fire breathing people with 100% loyalty to some shadow government.

In the future genetic engineering will likely be as common place as things like vaccinations.

What you are talking about is almost exactly the plot of the movie; Gattaca.

you are talking as if you have not seen that movie, and while I will not disagree with anything you have been saying about going all gung-ho with genetic engineering, there are other aspects of societies and economic concerns such an unbalanced system of half superior, half inferior human race would bring up.

anyways, go watch Gattaca, its a good movie.

I'll put it on my list, though it is just a movie.   Pretty much EVERYBODY realizes at this point that IQ's aren't a definitive means of quality.

In fact, a lot of good research actually tends to show that IQ is about levels and not an exact number.  For example, say you aproximitly need an IQ of 110 to be a research scientist.

Someone with a 130 IQ actually probably isn't better off then someone with a 115 IQ.

The only way I could see it causing problems is if the other half were intentionally downgraded... which even then would only provide negatives.
