That's the letter of the law, yes, but Labour was completely useless at enforcing that, and our very own Deputy Prime Minister wanted to give all illegal immigrants complete amnesty. They're not entitled to anything, but they get everything.
Of course, legal immigration, which includes legal immigration due to refugee status, is fine.
And for the record, I wouldn't touch News of the World, the Daily Mail or the Sun with a ten-kilometre pole.

Thats was exactly why the DPM said we needed an amnesty, Illegal Immigrants are entitled to nothing, and get nothing. They cannot work legally nor can they claim benefits or seek medical assistance. If they did they would be arrested and deported. As a result they give nothing, live in poor conditions, and end up working for criminals or in criminal activity (such as prostitution or software pirating) as they have no alternative.
If they we given amnesty, they could work legally and and would pay taxes. organised criminals would lose their workforce and illegal immigrants wouldn't have to take desperate measures just to survive.
we're very good at following the laws which parliament enacts, the problem is that we cannot help these people who are desperate just to survive, they've often come from horrendous lives abroad, and end up living only slightly better lives here. There are many people who out there that we cannot help, and they end up involved in crime. And the new government haven't helped the situation either, this odd cap on immigration helps no-one, and their efforts to cut back on immigration controls and support for systems abroad can only make things worse.

Immigration caps really aren't odd. I mean, if you look at nations with very diverse conditions you basically see why.
Everyone tries to move to the areas that are best... shanty towns form and 90% of the people who immigrate are actually worse off then when they left, but they can't go back.
With immigration caps off, this same thing would happen. Rich countries would overflow with overpopulation and be unable to cope with these people leaving them to even worse lives then they have.
Eventually, immigration would have to be stopped all together because of it.

Considering it only affects immigration from outside the EU, and only for certain skill bases, it affects less than 1% of immigration. It doesn't stop illegal immigration, or immigration from other EU countries where the vaste majority of immigration comes from.
All it does is put a cap on skilled immigrants who's skills can't be found in the UK, hence the Oliver Wyman, Citigroup, Barclays complaints in recent months of not being able to bring in their skilled workforce.
|
You honestly don't think way more poor immigrants without jobs or education would show up if i was legal?
|
it's not legal, illegal immigration is illegal. Unskilled workers do not have leave to remain in the UK.
|
Yeah, and if it was leagal you'd have waaaaay more unskillled workers in the UK.
You'd have the people who think it's ok to break the law via illegal immigration... and tons of people who respect immigration laws.
You'd probably have 10 times the amount of immigrant workers. Except you couldn't tell any of them to leave if you needed to.
|
I'm not sure what your point is. It wouldn't be in the UKs interest to open it's boarders up to the world, and i don't believe anyone has argued that.
The cap stops skilled workers from coming to the UK, even when they are sponsored by a company. If the cap is reached, no more are allowed in, even if it's 6 months into the year, and your company desperately needs that particular skill.
Unskilled workers don't have leave to remain in the UK anyway, so therefore the cap affects only a tiny amount of legal immigration.
Illegal immigration will always continue, it happens across the developed world, a cap on immigration won't stop that, precisely because it is illegal.
Strong boarder controls and efforts to fix problems where people migrate from are the only real, viable solutions.
The vaste amount of immigration comes from other EU countries, as it's legal to do so. You can't stop them, in the same way you can't stop people from one state of the US living and working in another. and you can't tell them to leave either, unless the commit serious crimes, but they'd usually serve time in HM Prisons in the UK.
