Sorry for the noob question, but .... what is campaign Matchmaking?

Its basically multiplayer matchmaking but with campaign.

Right so instead of battling the covenant and going through the story, you're just killing each other? I still don't get it.

 

Or is half the team Elites, and the other half Spartans?

It just means you can use xbox live to get campaign partners if you do not have people in your freinds list who want to play. You still ply as spartans going against the covenant completing the story/campaign. Its still co-op
