everyone thought Nintendo was crazy; analysts claimed instant success for the PSP, third party publishers focused their efforts away from the DS

The original DS was IMO too bulky and I think mainly the most vivid Nintendo fans bought the device back then and the PSP is an enormous success, far more so (by an enormous factor) than any other direct competition Nintendo had to deal with in nearly two decades of handheld gaming market domination.
