handhelds based on what 'new' things they offer not because they provide prettier graphics
I thought Nintendo already had near 100% market share of the handheld market before the release of the PSP, so why should anyone have thought the DS-lite wouldn't be popular as well? The Gameboy (+color) sold 120 million units!
There were much more powerful handheld consoles than the Gameboy around the time of release, but form factor, battery life, etc are more important for practical purposes.
I own 2 Nintendo DS systems and I owned a Gameboy Advance, my expectations for a handheld console are way different than for home consoles, also note there have been many touchscreen games before the release of the Nintendo DS, for PDAs.
