That really does suck.  I don't know what to say.  Are they still going to let you work while you heal?  If not, what are you going to do to stay afloat for the next six weeks?

I don't want to go all European on you... but do you guys not have sick pay?

It depends on where you work.  I have two weeks of vacation time every year, incredible discounts on medication and heatlthcare, and over 100 hours of sick time that I can use (my last job, I had ove 300 hours!).  But I can't just assume everybody has the same benefits.

Haha, in the UK, we can assume that everybody does get the same benefits, well, to a minimum (£80 a week for up to 28 weeks, most employers offer around 10 days of full pay - as an aside, my dad's firm offers duvet days, they come out of your 10 days sickness, but you won't be fired if you're not ill - if you're a healthy person, you can get the 10 days off, anyways - vacation pay is legal minimum of  28 days)
