Aside from Nintendo stuff, Final Fantasy, and Pokemon, I can't think of any franchises that have been equally successful in the east and west. There're plenty of examples on both sides though, Halo's not very successful in Japan, and Dragon Quest isn't very successful in the Americas and Europe, but both are megahits in their other territories.

I think it's more about how western developers find success in Japan much less often than Japanese devs find success in the West.  Western hits in Japan can pretty much be counted on one hand, and even then the only one that approached Japanese hits was a Nintendo franchise that happened to be developed by a western studio.

In comparison Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, a ton of Nintendo games, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and dozens of other games are not just decent sellers, but some of the best sellers in the west.  There has been a bit of a shift recently towards western games (besides Nintendo), but I'd say it's more the result of the games coming out of Japan than any dislike of Japanese games.  Western console development has also improved dramatically in the last couple generations in my opinion.
