I'm sure software developers would much rather know how many households have bought into it too.  The actual individual number of controllers sold is meaningless without the more important install base data.

Well, both info is of interest. Certainly install base is of interest for the reasons you mentioned, but also the device is supposed to have a high profit margin so if it ever became 'big', it could be relevant to the profits of Sony's Networked Devices Division. Also it would be relevant for developers of multiplayer games as well as games that use multiple devices with one player.
