Is there a reason why they can't use metal bats? I'm not really into baseball so I'm not what the the difference in bats make.

And there are good reasons not to use aluminum bats.  For one thing, the pitcher is put into a much more dangerous situation because of them.  Aluminum bats send the ball further and faster, to the point where the guy who throws the ball can't reliably protect himself if it comes flying back at him.  If the switch was made from wood to metal, we wouldn't be reading one rare story of someone impaled by a shattered bat but several stories each season of pitchers decommissioned (or worse) by a ball they couldn't possibly be expected to catch.
