Where is you Eye positioned? Try and put it somewhere that gives it a greater field of view over a shorter distance. For example, if you can put it higher angled down it'll read you as further away due to the added height plus the forward distance. Obviously at a certain point it'll be too high and distort things but I've found I can put it higher than my TV and stand withing 5 feet and everything seems to work fine.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
