16 years is a good life span for a small breed like that (anything over 12/13 years is doing well). Doesn't make it any less sad though.
Have a good cry, more than one.
We were out of town the day my dog died, she was being looked after by my sister. It was very sudden. One day she was out of sorts. My sister was going to take her to the Vet the following morning, but in the morning she was dead. She was 11 years old.
