As far as #1, yeah. I read somewhere on Bungie.net that they didn't want anyone's first play through to be ruined so they are waiting a little to do an update. Then you'll be able to do campaign matchmaking.

To answer your question on what's Firefight like, here:http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Firefight I know you are a Gears head and probably love Horde ( I mean who doesn't ) but Firefight is good too, loads of customization options.
